In the 15th century the Incas extended their empire and conquered northern Chile. They were followed by the Spanish in 1536, as they searched for gold and fertile land. Chile's eventual struggle for independence from Spain began in 1810, led by Bernardo O'Higgins. It was finally achieved in 1818.

With a toothy coastline of (2,650 miles, 4,265 km), pencil-thin Chile is wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, the world's longest mountain range. This land of incredible contrasts is home to the world's most arid desert, numerous active volcanoes, fjords, deep sea channels, glaciers, icebergs, and much, much more.

The vast percentage of its population is found near Santiago, along the narrow and productive central plain (or pampas).

Susi and Jean Walrand from Nassau Bahamas travelled to Ecuador and Galapagos in March 2008

Our trip was really fantastic. We understand your insistence we see more than the Galapagos. And we are glad we did the trip in the order that we did. It was always a pleasure to go back to the Plaza Grande as well. A great hotel, impeccable service and heated bathroom floors! Ecuador is a suprising place, and we are ready to go back. People are lovely, food is good, and the accomodations excellent.

The Galapagos were all we expected and more. We had a great guide named Robert Grimstone. The Alta was comfortable and clean, food good and the crew super. We were also lucky with the other 14 passengers...we all got along, and were at the same physical level, for the most part. No "bad apples."

The best part of the trip was meeting Marcia. She is a great guide and became a good friend. She understands her clients almost immediately and is so knowledgable about everything.

The Napo Wildlife Center in the Amazon basin was good too..but a lot of early mornings and rain....to be expected. Another day there would have been perfect.

All in all a well planned trip, as ususal. Thanks Tim. Now we have to decide what's next!
