The worlds fourth largest island hosts a fascinating diverse geography incorporating rainforest, desert, high plateau and tropical islands. Once part of three continents as Gondwanaland, it developed seperatly from Africa, its wildlife is unique - lemurs, aye aye's and striped civets. Almost half of the world's 134 chameleon species live on the island of Madagascar. This chameleon community is not only the world's largest, it is also the world's most unique; with 59 different species existing nowhere outside of Madagascar. Sadly a fast growing population adds annually to the burning and deforestation of this unique environment, so a visit here, as in much of Africa, should be made sooner rather than later. Roads are atrocious, but river trips are an excellent way to see a good cross section of the country. Best times for these are April to July when water levels are good and the weather beautiful. September to November is an excellent time for the Eastern rainforest areas, and for trekking, biking and car safaris anywhere on the island.

Overall the best time to visit is April to November, avoiding the cyclone season in Feb and March. The highlands can get pretty cold from June to August.

There are 18 very differnt tribes in the country - the first inhabitants actually came from Indonesia.

Isalo National Park with its craggy sandstone canyons and forests is the most visited park - though never crowded, and Ranomafana, Berenty and Masoala deserve visits.

We never met Tim Lapage, but the trips he had organized for some friends of ours were so successful... Tim asked each of us what we wanted to do, and although we came up with a very diverse list, he managed to satisfy each of us!
